Description:A fundamental step in HTS data analysis is the mapping of reads onto reference sequences. We applied our benchmark procedure to evaluate 14 mappers in the context of whole genome sequencing of small genomes with Ion Torrent data for which such a comparison has not yet been established. However, the process of DNA sequencing has always been an abstract extension of the research expedition, completed once the samples were returned to the laboratory. In order to compare these platforms, and get sufficient coverage depth to allow meaningful analysis, we have sequenced a set of 4 microbial genomes with mean GC content ranging from Sequencing in the field allowed us to propose hypotheses and conduct experiments and further sampling based on the sequences generated.
