The Spanish Football Federation RFEF announced on Wednesday that there will be a strike due to a dispute with the government concerning television rights, following new legislation that was passed last week aimed at creating a more balanced distribution of rights money across the top-flight clubs in Spain. Under old laws, Barcelona and Real Madrid earned three times as much as other clubs in the Primera Division as they were able to negotiate the sale of their own broadcasting rights , but the Spanish government gave the green light to a new ruling which would see 50 per cent of TV money distributed evenly across the 20 top-flight teams. However, the RFEF and president Angel Maria Villar, as well as the players' union, have come out in opposition to the new ruling and backed a hiatus in competitive matches. Following a meeting on Wednesday, the RFEF published a statement in which they alleged they had not been consulted properly over the changes and complained of a "lack of respect" on the part of the government.
